Dominic Condo
Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania
I was born and raised in South Philadelphia, now living in the Philly 'burbs of Drexel Hill. I enjoy sharing traditional (and personally updated) Italian American recipes and the family stories that go along with them at my blog, Cucina Domenico (domskitchen.blogspotcom). Some of my favorite times are spent in the kitchen with my daughter, who is very eager to learn how to cook. I am also involved in food blog collaborations with Una Mamma Italiana and am a contributor to Lorraine Ranalli's Cucina Chatter radio program. I look forward to sharing stories and recipes here as well!

One of the genuine pleasures of writing a blog is making contacts with others who share a similar passion. I have been fortunate enough to make several meaningful relationships over the years with other bloggers and foodies. Recently, my friend Dan Putkowski, author of several books including Bonk’s Bar and An Island Away, contacted me...

One of the biggest thrills that comes with writing this blog is being able to share some of my family’s recipes. For this post I am very honored to share with you a stuffed pepper recipe inspired by my Aunt Tina. I use the word ‘inspired’ because, like most Italian family recipes, exact measurements were not specific....

The cold winter air is finally settling in, which means it’s the perfect time to enjoy a hearty, stick-to-your-ribs kind of meal. Soups, stews and chili always make for a great comfort food this time of year. But one of my favorite dishes to make during the winter months is risotto. Accented with anything from herbs and wine, to fish and...

Like the star that led the Wise Men to the stable, it’s the hot pepper salad that leads my family to the table! Hot pepper salad, which is a staple Condo family recipe, has been served at many graduation, confirmation and communion parties, and at every major holiday dinner for as long as I could remember. However, Christmas Eve...

Of all the different dishes that I’ve made over the years, it’s the the traditional, simple comfort foods that I still enjoy making the most. Italian soul food – as my good friend Lorraine Ranalli fondly calls it – has been the staple to many Italian-American households for generations. Hearty dishes...

Now’s the time for all things pumpkin to make its way into my kitchen. Everything from pumpkin coffee, bread, muffins, pies, spices, soup, ice cream, and of course beer….you name it and I’m a sucker for it. Over the next few weeks I’m going to share some pumpkin recipes that are fantastic for this time of year,...

Grilling fruit is a fun and delicious way to prepare dessert in the summertime. It’s also a nice way to impress your guests without much effort! Bananas and peaches are my usual go-to grilling fruits, and my friend Jay also does grilled pineapple. Preparation is simple and grilling time only takes a few minutes. First thing you want to do is clean...

They say when life gives you lemons, make lemonade. But what do you do when life gives you a hurricane that rips almost all of your premature green tomatoes off of its vine? Last week’s massive storm that rolled through our area did just this. To say that I was heartbroken is an understatement. Thankfully our next door neighbor,...

Potato salad could arguably be one of the most popular salads served this time of year. From roast beef, chicken and pulled pork sandwiches, to grill-outs and picnics, potato salad is hands-down the side dish staple. The combination of potatoes and mayonnaise (often with the addition of carrots, celery, eggs, and even bacon bits) is...

Out with the old, and in with the new. Not only is that my motto for New Years resolutions and spring cleaning, it also applies to my annual limoncello bottling! Every year at this time I start the bottling process of my home made 'cello (fondly called Domenicello) that has been sitting in a large mason jar, infusing in a dark...

This week we're going back to the basics with a simple pasta dish that is my daughter Julianna's favorite meal. It's a simple dish that's very easy to make, and works great for an easy weekday meal. It's also a nice alternative to alfredo sauce - not as heavy, and with more of a garlic kick.    Since...

Last week we hosted a family dinner to celebrate my Mom's birthday. As with previous family dinners, I planned on making a special dish that was equal parts taste and presentation. This year I really wanted to wow my Mom with one of her favorite foods, eggplant. I decided to make an Eggplant Timbale, which is made of of an outer shell of eggplant...

I am a person who values tradition. It plays an important part in our family. As the seasons change, we look forward to special events, family visits, road trips and of course, special meals! About 10 years ago, my Uncle started a tradition of making his own home-made wine. Like many Italians from generations past, he takes great...

I've been making homemade chicken soup for a little over a year now. It's the perfect compliment to the cold weather that we just can not seem to get away from these days. It's also a great meal for those of us who still can't shake those nasty colds! The idea of adding tortellini came to me earlier this month, when we were...

My wife had given me this great cook book a few years ago, Italian Baking Secrets by Father Giuseppe Orsini. It's filled with all of the great traditional recipes for  Italian cookies, cakes, breads and pastries. The only problem was that most of these recipes called for a counter-top mixer. A hand-held mixer is just not strong enough...
